Palestine-Israel Conflict

There is an ongoing struggle between Palestinians and Israelis beginning with the mid-20th century. The conflict is still wide-ranging being the core-part of the Arab-Israeli conflict. This conflict is known in the whole world as ‘the most intractable conflict’. When dealing with the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, the issues are the following:

  • Mutual recognition;
  • Borders;
  • Security;
  • Israeli settlements;
  • Control of Jerusalem;
  • Palestinian freedom of movement.

Still, there are two primary issues as far as this conflict is concerned. First of all, there is the struggle to keep an ethically preferential state. The original population was both Muslim and Christian. There are also refugees who are prohibited to return to their homes within the Jewish state. In this respect, there is systematic discrimination.

Second, Israel’s military occupation and control over Gaza are known to be extremely oppressive. Thousands of Palestinian people are held in Israeli prisons. Few of these people had a legitimate trial. Both physical abuse and torture are extremely frequent. Palestinian borders are controlled by forces from the Israeli side. People are tortured while women in labor cannot reach hospitals. Food as well as medicine are stopped from entering Gaza. Israeli forces are invading and killing inhabitants daily.

In 1993, according to the Oslo peace accords, this territory was supposed to become a Palestinian state. Israel continued to confiscate land while the Palestinian population rebelled. Since 2006, the Palestinian side was fractured by conflict between two factions: the dominant party, Fatah and Hamas, its later electoral challenger. After Hamas won the elections, the Quartet (USA, Russia, United Nations and the European Union) brought assistance to the Palestinian Authority and came up with several demands including non-violence, recognition of the State of Israel as well as the acceptance of the previous agreements. Hamas rejected all these demands, resulting in the Quartet’s suspension of all programs.

The delicate issue which still exists is the control of Jerusalem. Each side is asserting claims over the city. The three main Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Islam and Christianity, deem Jerusalem an important setting for both historical and religious narratives. Jerusalem is the holiest of all cities and it is known as the former location of the Jewish temples. For the Muslims, Jerusalem is related to Mohammad’s night journey to heaven while for the Christians, Jerusalem is the holy site of the crucifixion of Jesus as well as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
